I’ve finished the second squad of cultists. Now there are only the six Chosen, the Helbrute and the Lord left! Soon it will be time to start thinking about a list to play with.. I’m thinking to start with 1000 points, including at least the two cultist squads. I might add more models to the close combat squad though, so that the inevitable Dark Apostle will have a nice flock to ‘inspire’.. 😉
Buron smiled in satisfaction. The cell led by Kurt had arrived exactly on time to occupy the Arbites patrol, allowing his cell to kill the guards of the powerplant. Nervously, he fingered the bomb that he had been given by the Prophet’s servant. One last time, he summed up the instructions: find the cooling tubes leading into the plasma core. Place the device and give the prayer. Paint the symbols in blood and take the life of one servant, your own if necessary, to activate the bomb. The explosion and the energy shutdown of the whole sector will allow us to teach the Arbites that even their fortress cannot protect them from the wrath of the Justified. He checked one last time if all the guards were dead, and then made his way into the structure..

It’s been quite some time since the previous update, but I haven’t been idle! The first unit of cultists is finished, and the second one is already quite underway. I’ll post pics of those soon.
My plans for painting are to first get the Dark Vengeance models painted, and from there expand the list. When the DV models are done, I think we’ll play a battle with both our forces. Based on that game, I’ll decide what next to build and paint! But first, the painted unit:
Kurt readjusted his mask and scratched the old mark branded in his shoulder, waiting for the last members of his cell to enter. With the door closing behind the last one, he took a deep breath and strepped from behind the pillar.
“Welcome, Revolutionaires! Honour to the Prophet! For months now, we have been hunted and prosecuted for asking questions! Countless workers have disappeared, only to find them back tortured and killed! This cruelty towards the hard working people of this manufactorium must end! We will not suffer the cruelty of our Arbites tyrants any longer! In less than an hour, a patrol will pass through this very manufactorium, assuming that they have this whole level in their iron grip. We, Revolutionaires of the Prophet, will teach them their error! Grab your weapons and follow me!”

See you next time,
I get to build a Chaos Space Marine army for my part of the Tale of Two Gamers. It seemed like a good idea, since Chaos and the Dark Angels are the newest two books for 40k and both of these have been designed for 40k 6th. I always had a love for Chaos in the fluff, and one arose above all others.. the Word Bearers!
In the beginnings of 4th edition, I already started a Word Bearers army, including the obligatory daemons. I even used it to win several small, independent tournaments! With the coming of 5th edition and it’s corresponding Chaos Space Marines book, I lost my appetite for the tournament scene and my Word Bearers also weren’t really playable any more, making them end up on the shelf collecting dust. I never lost interest in the fluff, especially not after reading Dark Apostle from the Black Library, but playing the army just didn’t do it for me. Fast forward to now, where we have both a new edition of the rulebook and a new Chaos Space Marines book! Together with the ability to legally take allies, I can finally build a correct Word Bearers army again. And that will be the task for the coming months!
Chaos models from Dark Vengeance
We both decided that the Dark Vengeance box is too good to pass by, and it is also a very nice start for new players that want to play either of the included factions. Therefore, we decided to start our first part of the blog with that box. The ultimate goal will be to build a 2000 points list but, since we don’t have a specific deadline, we will do this in small, manageable, steps. I am not completely sure if I will use all of the parts of the kit, but I am sure that most of it will end up in the final list, somehow. I already know, for example, that I will not include a unit of chosen. But it would be a shame not to include such beautiful models in my army! Therefore, they will be the unit champions of my Chaos Space Marine units! I have already checked what equipment the models carry, and all of these options are also possible to give to the CSM Champion models. The fact that the Chosen have mutated armor is an added bonus, since I am planning to give all my unit champions the Gift of Mutation anyway! Our box arrived a couple of days ago, so now it is time to start building! Next time, I’ll give you an overview of what I am considering for a first small list, and I also hope to show you some pictures of my first unit!
Until next time!
With the new Dark vengeance set by Games Workshop and the new codex: Dark Angels released this month it is an excellent moment to polish up my first 40k army. And since a good friend plays Chaos we decided to start a “Tale of Two Gamers” where we build our armies and play some battles.
In a series of articles I’ll keep track of building a new army which can be added to my existing collection. Hopefully by the end of the year I have a complete series of articles and a painted army for my efforts!
Building an army:
There are so many options when building an army. Rather than buying every model I like I decided to take a planned approach with my purchases. Since money is tight everywhere these days I plan on devising a list with minimal costs involved.
I will use the marines in the Dark Vengeance set as the base for my new army. Not only are the models gorgeous they also contain a variety of troops most players want to use and are an ideal start for new gamers! By trading with a friend it is easy to get the marines twice and I get the 6th edition rulebook as a bonus. If you are lucky you might even get your hands on the special edition box which contains a chaplain as limited edition model.
This basis nets me with:
- 2 company commanders
- 2 librarians
- 2 Full tactical squads
- 2 5 man Deathwing terminator squads
- 2 3 man Ravenwing biker units.
The 40k essentials (templates, rulebook and scatterdice)
All in all a solid basis for the cost of approximately 80 euros. By throwing in the new codex the total cost will be around 120 euro’s. So let’s open the codex and see what kind of army we can build with this.
My army will be led by a company master and a librarian. Psychic powers are just too cool to ignore! The core of any army are its troops. The two tactical squads will fill this role nicely. I’ll probably want to change some weapons in the unit but for now I’ll use the models as they are.
Ravenwing bikers and Deathwing terminators will add mobility and resilience to my list. I chose to make a single large unit out of the bikers. This way the enemy can’t ignore them. The terminators will be the hammer of my force. By using their special deepstrike rules and the teleport homers on the bike they will appear where and when I want them to. This brings me to a nice 1000 points list.
So the final list looks like this:
Company master, powersword, meltabombs 115
Librarian, mastery lvl 1 powerfield generator 95
Tactical squad (10), plasmagun, plasmacannon 170
Tactical squad (10), plasmagun, plasmacannon 170
Terminators (5), assaultcannon & Chainfist 245
Ravenwing bikers (5), 2 plasmaguns, powersword, 199
So now I’m off, building some models and do some painting!
Hopefully I can show you my first painted unit for the next article.
